REINVENTING
TRADE

Australian businesses are spending too much on conferences and expos in China that do little to expose their products to the country’s rising middle class, according to Australia City China directors Daryle Hill, Stevie Kimonides and Jason McLachlan.

Australia City China reports that small and medium-sized businesses are spending approximately AUD$10,000 for a display stand at three-day expo in China. These expos are “typically a once-off event, with little follow-ups or ongoing market exposure for participating businesses.”

Launched on 10 January 2020, over a three-day, Foshan Government endorsed, Australian shopping festival in Foshan city, Guangdong Province, Australia City China hopes to reinvent the way in which Australian goods, products and services are marketed to Chinese businesses and consumers.

Partnering with Mr Libing Chen, and with the support of The People’s Government of Foshan Municipality, Australia City China have secured brands such as juice company Emma & Tom’s, Berringa Honey, Smashvino, Clamms Seafood, Collagenade, Pearly Whites and other businesses selling Australian goods, products and services.

Australia City China will be housed in a 600sqm space at the A11 mall in Foshan, which Mr Libing Chen has leased for the next two years, with an option to renew for another 2 years. The mall is split into two sections, one focusing on business-to-consumer services and fast-moving consumer goods and the other floor for business-to-business products, which will be by invitation only. On a typical weekday the mall’s foot traffic would be about 15,000, and 25,000 on weekends.

With the support of The People’s Government of Foshan Municipality and 20 local business associations with an average membership of 100 businesses each, Australia City China has access to a “network of 2000 businesses looking to buy Australian products.”

The cost of a 12 month display in the Australia City China showcase costs approximately AUD$40,000, which is what a business might spend buying into four three-day trade expos in China, in a year.

Australia City China is expanding into other provinces across greater China, and reinventing trade between Australia and China.
